With an average tidal range of 8.47m Bridgwater Bay in Somerset has significant energy potential and has featured in every significant study on tidal power in the Severn.
We have completed a first phase of work, including meetings with over 100 stakeholders, to develop our thinking and assess the feasibility of a lagoon on the site. That work has highlighted significant interest in the lagoon’s potential to complement the visitor economy, deliver opportunities to local businesses and enhance flood risk management, particularly for coastal storm surge and tidal surge flooding.
Bridgwater Bay is a dynamic and sensitive environment and the potential environmental impact considerations associated with a development of this scale, within a dynamic and ecologically important estuarine context, sit at the heart of our proposals. We will work collaboratively with nature conservation bodies and the UK’s leading environmental technical experts throughout the development and assessment of any scheme we bring forward.
More detailed work will be required before the full development programme is initiated. However our early work has ensured that our plans for a lagoon in this area have been well informed by evidence and key stakeholder input. We are confident that a thoughtfully designed lagoon in Bridgwater Bay could be a significant addition to the region.
